FIVE IMPORTANT LIFE POINTS:
#1 - Ferris shifts her position in the chair, leaning back a little. Her fidgeting gives the impression that you're going to be here for a while so you gear yourself up for the task. "I have a boy's name." The statement is blunter than a plastic knife. "I'm aware of that, but for some reason people find it necessary to remind me when they meet me. Like, how are they expecting me to react? 'Oh my God, so I do! I never noticed before! Thank you for pointing that out to me!' It's been twenty-four years, I've definitely noticed. So have my parents. And all my friends. When my mom was pregnant she was convinced that she was having a boy, thanks to a trainee ultrasound technician. My parents became fixated on the name Ferris, so when I appeared they had no idea what to do with me. There was no back-up plan in case of a girl emergency. I had no name for the first two months of my life until they finally decided to go with the name they always intended to use. Don't ask me why they didn't do that to begin with. I love my name regardless, I think it suits me... and it's always, uh, a conversation starter. There are always plenty of 'Save Ferris' jokes when I take a sick day from work."
#2 - "I was seven years old when my mom walked out on Christmas morning." She presses her lips together. Seventeen years of dealing with, and you assume, moving on from the whole thing doesn't necessarily make it any easier to talk about. "Chistmas Eve was totally normal, nobody saw anything coming. I just woke up and found my dad crying." She frowns, and you can tell that this it's still a subject she doesn't like to discuss in great detail even after all this time has passed. "I don't know what she said to my dad that morning, but he thought that she was going to come back. And because of that, so did I. We spent about a year waiting, every day we thought that she might walk through the door. I tried to remain optimistic but when the twelve month mark hit, we realized that it was unlikely she ever would. It was a really strange experience because I think it made me grow up quite suddenly, because it was just my dad and I and we had to learn to look after each other, but at the same time I was still just a silly kid who spent Saturday watching cartoons and colouring in. I mean, we obviously used to chip in around the house, but because the chores were divised up we knew how to do some things but not others. We could use the dishwasher but not the washing machine, so we had to learn that. When it came to food I couldn't do anything more elaborate than a PB&J and my dad wasn't exactly a gourmet chef. Still, we adapted because we had to. School was awkward too, because I became 'the girl whose mom left on Christmas Day', which doesn't have much of a ring to it. I was either avoided like the plague or asked really weird questions. I don't know whether it was due to guilt, but my mom never got in contact, at least not with me. I sometimes get the feeling there might have been hushed phone conversations between them. It hurt. Of course it hurt, I was heartbroken. But I just kept telling myself that wherever she had gone or whoever she was with, she was happier now, and I needed to stay strong for my dad."
#3 - "So once that was over with, nothing exciting really happened! When I was a teenager I was ridiculously boring. I had no social life so I just did my homework and then sat around drawing or reading or watching any and every movie I could get my grubby little mits on. I was seriously into crafts, so I would knit and crochet like a little old lady. Scrapbooking was also one of my vices... I just took any art-related class going because I already knew it was what I wanted to do in some form. As you can expect I didn't really fit in anywhere, although I had friends and acquaintances scattered around the place I was hardly at the top of anybody's guest list. So I was pretty well behaved not in a pompous fashion, but because I just never had the opportunity to be bad!" Ferris shrugged, then giggles. "That doesn't mean I was completely innocent, just... responsible. Haha, yeah right."
#4 - "I think I was, uh..." Her face scrunches. There's some mumbling and finger-counting, before she continues. "Twenty-one. I was twenty-one when my dad finally re-married. To my step-mom, her name is Josephine and she's amazing. Maybe I'm biased she's as artsy as I am. We have Craft Sundays where we talk about all kinds of random things and make scarves or cards or whatever's taken our fancy. And I'm about to go off on a huge tangent about crafts. Antway. As far as I know my dad never really went out on any dates or anything before he met her, so I was beginning to think that was it for his dating life. Maybe he did and wasn't telling me, I don't know. But it made me kind of sad because he deserved somebody nice. Then one night he kept mentioning this woman he met at work. She had just moved into town, she had a daughter, they had coffee together during their lunch break. There was a new anecdote every day, without fail. It was so cute. And so obvious he had a little crush on her. After a lot of convincing from me, he asked her out, she said yes, and here we are! I mean. Obviously they dated inbetween. I didn't actually meet her until they'd been dating a while, I think he was worried about the possiblity of us not getting along, which is ridiculous because we have so much in common. And she makes him so happy, it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. At their wedding I was a bridesmaid with my little step-sister who is one of my favourite people. I have the best conversations with her. Whenever I'm at home we watch Adventure Time together and I teach her how to draw Disney Princesses."
#5 - "I guess that brings us to now... I graduated from college where I studied illustration, but there wasn't much of a call for it in my hometown. There were no jobs going that related to what I wanted to do so I was bartending and trying to build up a presence on the internet by starting a website and a blog and stuff. I had some comissions, which was cool, but it wasn't really enough. I had to accept that if I really wanted to do it full time then I'd have to move. I didn't go to college in my hometown, but I went back all the time, so full-on moving out was a scary thought. I decided I'd only do it if I got a solid job offer, otherwise it could all be pointless. So when I got the call saying I had a job here in L.A. I had to pack my bags. I mean, you know I'm going to be going back there all the time just like I did in college, but this time it's the permanence of moving away that I haven't adjusted to yet. I'm still ridiculously excited to start my new job. I get to draw. And get paid for it. That's a wonderful concept in my opinion."
FIVE THINGS YOU ALWAYS CARRY:
"Uh... Okay. I either carry the bare essentials, and if it won't fit in any of my pockets it doesn't come along for the ride, or I carry way more than five things. Damn. I didn't think this would be hard."
NUMBER ONE "...would be my phone. I have a lime green iPhone 5C, and when it works it's awesome... but it has a tendency to not want to. I should probably get it fixed and stop dropping it on the floor so much.
NUMBER TWO "my iPod. I listen to way too much music to just listen to it on my phone, but I have some on there in case of emergency. I'm assuming that my headphones count with this because if you're going to make them count as a separate thing then you're an asshole, my friend."
NUMBER THREE "Moleskine sketchbook and pens or pencils, both on a good day. If all else fails, some kind of thing that I can write or draw on and transport home with me will suffice."
NUMBER FOUR "Post-It notes. Hear me out here. They're really awesome for leaving little notes and reminders for yourself and leaving little messages in places for people to read. But they can be pulled off really easily, so I can't be prosecuted for vandalism!" This causes you to wonder whether she has been, or was very nearly, prosecuted for vandalism in the past. Despite your temptation you don't pursue it.
NUMBER FIVE "Oh. Damn. The last one has to be a good one or else I'll hate myself forever." Her hands pat at her pockets, she pulls her bag up on to her knee and has a look inside. "Is it bad that I can't remember basic things that I carry around with me all day?" Cue more rummaging. "I think I jinxed myself, because the most interesting thing I can find that I haven't already mentioned is my keys. They're really nice though. I have my cute little car keys, my apartment key which is pretty boring, and a fistful of keyrings from various trips that I or people I know have been on. They weigh me down. Good for use as a weapon if necessary, though. I also have a bottle opener on here in case of emergency."
QUICKFIRE ROUND:
FAVOURITE DRINK? "Disaronno and coke. Ideally the coke has been in the fridge before hand, if not it has to be on the rocks."
FAVOURITE FOOD? "All of it. I love food. But I guess if I had to choose, it would be pizza. Or pancakes. Or waffles. Uhm. Just anything unhealthy and some things that are healthy but taste surprisingly good."
FAVOURITE MOVIE? "Don't even... no... You can't do this to me. Oh God. Whatever I say I'm going to feel really bad for not saying something else. Pass."
DO YOU PLAY ANY INSTRUMENTS? "Piano, actually! And I can carry a tune in a manner that's not too painful. At least that's what people tell me after a few rounds of drunken karaoke."
HAVE ANY PETS? "I wish! I love animals. I used to bring strays into the house all the time when I was younger, I became notorious with the neighbours for finding peoples' missing pets. When I've settled down in L.A. and got my apartment straight, I'm going to see somebody about a baby tortoise. His name will be Jesse Pinkman. The tortoise, obviously."
INDOORS OR OUTDOORS? "I'm going to be really awkward and say both. It depends. I like to go on walks and hikes. I spend too much time on the roof of my apartment building. But indoors is nice and cosy, there are books and blankets and TV... Both."
