Unfortunate was his childhood in London. And to think that somehow with determination and true intentions, he would have changed his fortune completely, turned it around to make it so that he could create a better childhood for the generation after himself, but just like his abandoning father, James had no heart of his own. He stole others’ is other to make ends meet for himself because he was never determined enough to create his own fortune. His mother was an exhausted single mother of three and was tired of fighting to keep James’ mind to stray into bad decisions in life but getting involved with the deadly (literally deadly) gangs and making friends with the runaway criminals his age were actions not even someone as moral as her could stop him from, so she let him go. Like literally let him go, she locked him out of the house one night and the first time, he didn’t even notice because he was passed out on booze and drugs at a friend’s (really, they weren’t his friends) house, but after realizing that he wasn’t welcome back in his old home until he “fixed himself up” and made himself a better influence to his little siblings, so he decided it wasn’t worth it. He never did realize that it wasn’t fair to his mother, but he never cared, since he was better off without her and surely, she was better off without him too because even though he was the older of his siblings, he should have been more understanding about the fact that she was working as a daycare teacher and could barely make it by with her three kids. With the woman holding him back, he was free to do whatever he wanted, not having to “make ends meet.” And although the last thing Jenna wanted was to lost his son, she was easily raising two kids who were much more understanding and appreciative than James, who never saw or heard from his family again after that.
He made his own family. Well, six other guys shared a place in London, somewhere halfassing their way through Community College, and a couple others were making so with part-time jobs, but no one was serious about their future and James, who juggled both work and Community College was no exception. The only difference was that he was incredibly smart and unintentionally applied himself in his studies. All he had to do was open his ears during class time and he aces every test. It’s been like that ever since he was a kid. He never felt the need to take advantage of his intellect. In fact, if you haven’t noticed, this young man had no ambition. No feelings. He was angry at the world practically all the time. He hated his life, but he was making it happen, very slowly. He started playing the guitar, landing a few bowling alley gigs before he quit, he got promoted to full-time at a retail clothing store, so he started showing up to classes less and then he took advantage of all the cash he had on hand from the store at the end of the day, so he stole it all. He was closing the store alone, so no one noticed but the next day the assistant manager said she saw him on the tape taking the money and he asked her to lay off when she threatened to call the police if he didn’t return it all, so he pretty much strangled her to death because…well, he needed the money, mostly to get away now, make himself disappear. The call was made before she died, but before the police could get to him, he fled the country, losing yet another family of it.
The next two years, he laid even lower. By now, he was 21. He used the money he stole to finish his Associate’s Degree in Boston, where he applied to Harvard and actually got in, but after being caught naked on top of his professor in her office, he had to leave and so did she, which he didn’t really ever feel bad about. He stayed home for a few months after that before looking for a job, even though no one wanted to hire him because of his exit from Harvard. A point around that time, he was in a coffee shop where a Harvard student was beating himself up over the upcoming LSAT’s. He never took them, but he had read enough Law text to understand exactly what the graders were looking for. The nervous student willingly paid James to take the exam for him. Showing an ID would have been hard, but the student and James didn’t look too different. James aced that test for the student with no problems at all and got the extra cash on hand, which turned into a full-on successful service when other stressed Law students got the news about James (his name wasn’t known, just that he was someone very careful and only met you if you were serious about cheating and paying up). So that went on for about a year or two and he even managed to dress up as a few girls, rocking blonde and red and brown wigs on occasion in tight jeans and sweats to keep from attracting too much attention.
So let’s go back to the part where James doesn’t have a heart, but he loves stealing them. It’s been happening ever since he was in high school. He had a habit of charming girls (and guys) out of their pants and using that to his advantage only to the point where he’s pleased for a night and he never looks back. He’s never had a girlfriend, but the closest he’s come to one was a fling that started from a one-night stand and ended a week later, only because she was a good lay…and she was bass in his band. Feelings never made sense to him and it was sickening to him how people could “fall in love” and “get married.” Not only did it not make sense, but he called people with feelings like that stupid. He was a hater of love and at the same time, he was the one struck the hardest by it as if the universe wanted to hit him with it as hard as possible to make him believe that love was real. James literally in a matter of seconds believed it was not only real, but that he was capable of feeling it. He hated it and loved it at the same time. He wanted to run away and embrace it at the same time. He didn’t know what to do, especially because she obviously didn’t have that love-at-first-sight feeling for him. She was just another Harvard student. She was the roommate of the LSAT student that he was helping cheat, only he didn’t ask this particular LSAT student to pay in cash. They both agreed to another form of payment and that’s how he met her. The feeling was too strong as if he was actually picturing a perfect little family with her where nothing was wrong and he’d actually get that life for his kids he’d always wanted, with a mom and dad and the wealth to last them a lifetime.
But like I said, she didn’t want anything to do with him at first because first of all, she knew about his reputation. People paid him to take the LSATs for them and what’s worst was that he was taking sex as payment too! But really, that was just once. And the very last time. In fact, he never did it again. He spent the next month trying to convince the lovely roommate to just give him a chance and get to know him and the more she did, the more she regretted it because there was nothing special about him and along that time, he discovered she was perfect from every angle, especially the one where she had a heart enough to still give him a chance. His real personality took a year to develop and she found herself warming up to the new him to a point where she agreed to married him and another year or two down the road, they were having their first child. She had graduated by then and they were happily back in their home town, in England. At which point, he was visited by the law who were searching for him, but the description of the man they were searching for, the murderer from London didn’t match this person. First of all, James’s hair was blonde back in high school and throughout his Community College days, so whoever did witness and identified him as the killer in New York probably had it all wrong, because James’s natural hair were brown. Plus, he was married and happy and with a wife that even his reaction to their allegations was a shock to him as if he were a completely different person. He really was, because he couldn’t even remember he’d done something so awful. The people who visited him said they were law, but they weren’t. They were, however, impressed by his ability to lie so well and hide out so close to New York with such an easy cover-up, the wife, the kid.
The men that called themselves the law at first told him the truth, said they worked for a man named Don in Florida, USA and personally asked for James, willing him to pay him a million per year to come and work for him so he up and left his family. Well, the money was for his family, since he didn’t have enough credentials and experience to have a great job on his own. He came back a couple years later and his wife was obviously furious with him to leaving without a word and he reminded her he loved her and their son, but he made no promise that he would stay forever this time. He left her to deal with her second pregnancy on her own, coming back eight months later to help her through the birth of their second child, gorgeous little Harmony before he left again. Two years later he returned and actually stuck around for a few years, watched his little girl and his boy grow up. When little Harmony was 7, he left again, and this time, he didn’t come back. He never replied to his wife’s emails that said that she was still waiting for him. He took no note of the possibility that she could take her dancing talents and bring them to Hollywood to be closer to her kids. He was only grateful to know that she’d take him back and she’ll be there waiting for him when he came to see her, no matter where they were, just as long as she didn’t have to know how people he had to kill for Don in order to earn the money he made for his family..
